This Manga cannot be defined in a few words… As HARD as it trys to come off as average, it just simply isn’t. It doesn’t even troll it’s readers in an average way. Oh no! you won’t find your Kubo Tite brand of trolling in this manga. Nope, it’s far worse. It’s absolutely criminal.
One Punch man is about Saitama a man so powerful that he literally defeats ALL of his adversaries with one single punch. He starts to grow bored and strives to find an opponent who can withstand one punch. Along the way he gets dragged into adventures and humorous scenarios. Eventually he joins the hero association but gets no credit for defeating any threats that attack the world.
Our buddy Piccolo even makes a cameo.
If you understand what the writer is poking fun at it can be a very funny series. One of the more obvious examples being that shonen characters are often overpowered to the point where you start to wonder how in the world they even meet resistance. One Punch man is just that. He seriously takes out any and everyone with one single punch.
Now you’re probably thinking; how interesting could this manga be, if it’s protagonist goes around destroying people in one punch.
Here we have Saitama. The overpowered hero of this story.( I swear he doesn’t really look this average.) He decided to train in order to obtain enough power to protect others, and after achieving that power he now feels empty and seeks something else out in the world. Also he wants to grow his hair back since the “intense” training made him bald. Well besides the fact that Saitama himself is a pretty straight forward character personality wise, we have Genos. His “apprentice”.
Genos is a very interesting character with a somewhat deep backstory given how this manga likes to poke fun at typical shonens. Hes a cyborg that aims to get revenge against another cyborg that destroyed his home town. Therefore he seeks out someone who can teach him how to become stronger. Oh wait… that’s a typical shonen character plot…
Still despite that most of the interesting fights and struggles are seen from this character. The fighting scenes are so well done for him as well. You would think hes the main character until Saitama comes out of nowhere and punches the enemy away.
Yeah, don’t we all.
One Punch man pays a lot of attention to details. Sometimes! When the mangaka puts in the effort to make things look good. Wow does he make things look good!
The world in One Punch is…a bit dry. Cities and towns are litterally referred to as City Z or town X. You can’t get more generic than that. The pacing is all over the place as well. The lack of good story telling also makes it a complete shipwreck.
Talking in great detail is something that isn’t done too often in this manga. It’s pretty much this fight with a little bit of stalling from Genos or Saitama being an idiot to the next fight.
Despite from being a parody type manga this cannot excuse it from there literally being a non existent story at times.
The characters themselves save Saitama, can be very interesting at times, and this is it’s saving grace.
The worst thing about this manga is the pure trolling that it can accomplish. I swear one chapter of this series was literally wasted on … Just look at this link [ MangaFox ] Yes, a whole entire chapter wasted on that! It’s like you’re watching a bad anime drag on before it gets good. Which is why most people read manga and not watch the anime! Sure it looks nice, anyone can admit to the artist doing a spectactcular job on the panels, but he shouldn’t put so much effort into going nowhere! There are chapters where the artist literally wastes pages. Still some can make some awesome gifs. (Made by yours truly.)
Overall One Punch man is an awesome manga. However it falls so short of it’s potential because the writer takes everything that pisses readers off about shonens and does it 100 times worse. Yes, it can be funny sometimes however it can be brutal at times. I get it were making fun of shones but it doesn’t help when you bait us with a good chapter and completely waste the next one. I would recommend reading One Punch man when all of the chapters are out or in long bursts. Stay away from keeping up with it since it is bi monthly and some chapters will have you disappointed.
It’s strengths are definitely in it’s comedy, character designs, and art. However the story and pacing hold it back from it’s true potential. If it improved upon those it could easily be a better Manga. One Punch Man pulls through with 2 punches out of 5. Guess he got his wish. Despite the score I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a laugh.
